“You can pray until you faint, but unless you get up and try to do something, God is not going to put it in your lap.” Fannie Lou Hamer
Fannie Lou Hamer is my shero and a prophet. This activist, community organizer and Civil Rights leader embodied Micah 6:8. She was known for her strong faith and her faithful works. After we pray with words, it continues when we pray with our actions, our lives and our commitment.
This weekend I attended a One Woman Act play that brought the spirit and life of Fannie Lou Hamer to life. It reminded me of her wisdom, insight, bravery, courage, and brilliance. The powerful connection is that her gems of wisdom still apply to us in 2021 and beyond. We honor her best by remembering her and embodying her life by our actions. She took risks …. literally risked her life to speak truth. Her faith was not in words, but in how she lived her life.
Prayer: May we remember Fannie Lou Hamer’s wisdom to put legs on our prayers and walk in the direction of what we prayed for.
I invite you to listen to Fannie Lou Hamer in her own words, This was her testifying at the 1964 Democratic National Convention. Take the time to listen to her speaking truth to power.
Prayer: May we remember Fannie Lou Hamer’s wisdom to put legs on our prayers and walk in the direction of what we prayed for.
Thank you Fannie,
I journeyed to Ruleville, MS to the Fannie Lou Hamer Memorial. I am grateful for my friend who captured this shot. Our group was leaving and I remained still looking at the statue and saying an inward prayer of thanks.
