Storm Friends

Storm Friends

This past weekend, many of us were affected by stormy weather. As I looked outside at the turbulent skies, I had a full schedule pulling me out into the storm. In that moment, a question echoed in my mind: 'Sheila, who are your storm friends?'

Storm friends are those who stand by us during life's most challenging moments. They offer strength, comfort, and perspective when we feel our most vulnerable, helping us navigate through the roughest of times.”

The benefits of Storm Friends

1. Emotional Support: In the midst of chaos, storm friends provide a safe space to share feelings and process emotions. They listen without judgment, offering understanding and care, helping us not feel alone. Scripture reminds us in Romans 12:15, “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.” Storm friends embody this truth by sitting with us in our pain and honoring what we feel rather than rushing us through the storm.

2. Perspective and Clarity: Storms can cloud our judgment. Friends help us see things from a different perspective, offering insights we might miss when we’re overwhelmed by stress or pain. As Proverbs 27:17 teaches, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Storm friends help sharpen our thinking and restore clarity when the storm has blurred our vision.

3. Strength in Vulnerability: True friends remind us that it’s okay to be vulnerable. They provide a space to be our authentic selves, allowing us to feel human and not having to carry the weight of the storm on our own. In 2 Corinthians 12:9, we are reminded, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Storm friends help us remember that weakness is not failure—it is often where God’s strength shows up most clearly..

4. Encouragement and Accountability: When we feel like giving up, storm friends encourage us to keep going. They hold us accountable to our goals and values, helping us push through the tough times and stay grounded. Hebrews 10:24–25 calls us to this kind of relationship: “Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds… encouraging one another.” Storm friends are those who lovingly push us forward when the storm tempts us to stop.

5. Shared Burdens:Sometimes the burden is too heavy to carry alone. Friends who walk with us in the storm share the load, whether by offering a listening ear, practical help, or simply their presence. Galatians 6:2 reminds us, “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” Storm friends help carry the weight so that no one has to face the storm alone.

6. Reminder of Love and Belonging: Storms can make us feel isolated, but friends remind us we are loved and that we belong. Their companionship offers a light in the darkness, affirming that we are not alone, no matter how strong the storm. Ecclesiastes 4:9–10 reminds us, “Two are better than one… If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.” Storm friends lift us up and remind us that even in life’s storms, we are held in love and community.

Storm friends are the ones who stick by us help us rise after we fall, and stay steady until the storm passes.
