“Rejoice with those who rejoice [sharing others’ joy], and weep with those who weep [sharing others’ grief].” Romans 12:15

I have always been intrigued by the life of trees.

Trees teach us about community. They care for one another. This reminds me of the Body of Christ and we are called to do the same. In the midst of all that is happening in our world, we need each other.

  1. “But the most astonishing thing about trees is how social they are. The trees in a forest care for each other, sometimes even going so far as to nourish the stump of a felled tree for centuries after it was cut down by feeding it sugars and other nutrients, and so keeping it alive.”

Trees teach us about community. They care for one another. This reminds me of the Body of Christ and we are called to do the same. In the midst of all that is happening in our world, we need each other. Since they are connected, they are able nourish and encourage each other.

2. “The reason trees share food and communicate is that they need each other. It takes a forest to create a microclimate suitable for tree growth and sustenance. So it’s not surprising that isolated trees have far shorter lives than those living connected together in forests.”

Trees teach us that we are made for community. One of the lessons from the pandemic was the importance of connection. In the midst of quarantine, we found creative ways to stay connected. Being in community boosts mental and physical health.

3. “This is because a tree can be only as strong as the forest that surrounds it.”

Trees remind me of the principle of Ubuntu - “I am because you are”. It calls for a connection between us. the word ubuntu is just part of the Zulu phrase means that a person is a person through other people. It reminds us that we are made for community and connection in all of our life seasons.

Grateful for the wisdom of trees,
Sheila
